Mongolian Yurts (gers) were initially designed millions of years ago to withstand the harshest climates and be easily dismantled and moved with livestock. The rolling Steppes of Mongolia have winter lows of -40°F and summer highs of 113°F, with strong year-round winds. Approximately 30% of Mongolians continue to live as pastoral nomads, relocating 4-10 times each year with their families, livestock, and yurts (also known as gers). Hundreds of thousands more live in yurts set up for permanent residence on the edges of Mongolian cities in “ger districts.”

  • Each yurt is painted with a lead-free base color, with colorful detail added on top (also lead-free). It is then sealed with lacquer.
  • Seven base color choices are included in the base price. Please see the photo albums below for more details.
  • You can have a yurt with no base color but with decorative detail, with no color at all, or carved, for an additional cost.
  • Carved yurts are created using a small, handheld machine.
  • You cannot have a yurt that has untreated wood. It needs to be at least lacquered. You also can not have a yurt that has color and is carved.

Our all-natural, extra-thick, fire- and bug-resistant sheep wool felt insulation is of the highest quality and a superb insulator. Nothing like it exists outside of Mongolia.

The felt insulation layer comes in two overlapping wall pieces, tied to the yurt frame, and two overlapping roof pieces that also overlap with the wall felt. However, if you have added windows or extra doors, the wall, felt, and cover configuration could change.

Please see our Felt Insulation Details page for more detailed information.

Our canvas is made from 100% cotton. It is durable, breathable, all-natural, and mostly waterproof and fire resistant. It has not been treated with chemicals or added synthetics to ensure 100% waterproofness 100% of the time. You can further treat it to enhance its waterproofing capabilities or add additional synthetic layers for wetter climates. Please contact us for more information.

Specific cover details:

  • A thin, white, cotton sheet-like base layer for the roof that goes under the felt on top of the roof poles. This can be removed. Its primary purpose is aesthetics and to keep the felt layer clean.
  • Water-repellent dark green cotton canvas that goes on top of the felt insulation layer. It will be in two pieces. One for the front half, one for the back half.
  • Water-repellent white cotton canvas with decorative detail. This will be in one piece with overlapping ends to help hold it in place. The decorative detail is sewn onto the canvas in two spots: 1) around the roof/crown opening and 2) around the door frame.
  • Crown Cover – Water-repellent cotton canvas cover featuring decorative details on two of its four edges. This is a large, square piece of canvas with ropes attached to each of its four corners. It covers the roof/crown opening. The ropes can be used to pull the cover open and closed from the ground.
  • White cotton canvas decorative skirt for the bottom of the top layer of white canvas.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you have added windows or extra doors, the wall, felt, and cover configuration could change.

The walls are expandable, wood lattice sections that interlace and are tied together to form the circle of the yurt. They are made from dried wood that has been shaped, sanded, and steamed to create a slight bow to the overall wall. Each joint is tied together with camel sinew.

The 4-wall yurt will have four lattice wall sections that are tied together around the door; the 5-wall will have five, etc. However, if you have added windows or extra doors, the wall, felt, and cover configuration will change.

Tall Walls – For an extra charge, you can increase the height of the walls. The tall and regular wall heights are slightly different depending on the size of the yurt. Below is a table indicating the measurements based on yurt size.

  • If purchasing an extra door, you can have either a single or double door.
  • The Rood/Crown is the round center top part of the yurt. It has eight window openings with a center cut-out sectioned opening as well.
    • The cut-out at the very center remains open.
    • The eight openings come with ten options to fill them. PLEASE NOTE: Although these frames effectively block sound and dust, they are not 100% waterproof. The canvas cover will be needed to fully cover the roof/crown and keep the weather out.
      • 8-glass panes with wood frames,
      • 1-plastic pane with wood frame and hinge,
      • 1-aluminum stove pipe opening with wood frame;

  • All of the wood parts are made from locally sourced renewable larch, birch, or pine wood.
  • All wood parts except the walls (the door, windows, roof poles, center support poles, and roof/crown) are hand-painted with a base color and beautiful designs in the Uyanga style from central Mongolia. They are then covered with lacquer.
  • All paint is lead-free paint imported from Europe.
  • The ropes are made from horse and yak hair. Some nylon rope is used for packaging.
